1.1 Scope and General Provisions
Exhaust systems are designed to remove air contaminants—moisture, odors, heat, smoke, and hazardous gases—from a building and discharge them to the outdoors. The IMC regulates these systems in Chapter 5 (Exhaust Systems), which is the core chapter for this content area.
Key definitions to know:
Exhaust System: An assembly of components (ducts, fans, hoods, controls) that removes air from a space.
Makeup Air: Air supplied to a space to replace air exhausted by the system.

1.2 Duct Construction and Installation

1.3 Exhaust Termination

Termination Point: Exhaust ducts must terminate at least 3 feet from any property line, adjacent building, or opening into the building (e.g., a window or door). The termination must be at least 3 feet from a mechanical air intake, unless the intake is designed to handle the contaminant.
Protection: The termination must be protected from entry by birds, rodents, and rain. A screen with a mesh size of not less than 1/4 inch and not more than 1/2 inch is typical.
Location: The exhaust outlet must be located so that the discharged air does not create a nuisance or hazard. It must not be directed toward a walkway, or a window that can be opened.
Inspector's Check: Measure the distance from the termination to the nearest window, door, or property line. Confirm a screen is installed.
1.4 Makeup Air Requirements
When an exhaust system removes a significant amount of air, the building needs makeup air to prevent negative pressure. Negative pressure can cause backdrafting of combustion appliances (e.g., water heaters, furnaces) and poor performance of exhaust fans.
General Rule: Makeup air is required when the exhaust rate exceeds 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM). This is a key threshold in the code.
Residential Kitchens: For residential kitchen exhaust hoods, makeup air is required when the hood's exhaust capacity exceeds 400 CFM. The makeup air must be provided by a system that is interlocked with the exhaust fan (i.e., they turn on and off together).
Commercial Kitchens: Makeup air must be provided at a rate of not less than 80% of the exhaust rate. The makeup air must be delivered to the space where the exhaust is located.

Duct Requirements: Ducts for commercial kitchen exhaust must be:
Constructed of carbon steel (minimum 16 gauge) or stainless steel (minimum 18 gauge).
Welded or brazed; mechanical fasteners are not permitted.
Sloped to drain grease back to the hood.
Provided with access panels for cleaning.
Fire Suppression: The exhaust system must be protected by a fire suppression system (e.g., a wet chemical system) that is interlocked with the exhaust fan. The fire system must automatically shut down the fan when activated.
Exhaust Rate: The minimum exhaust rate is based on the type of equipment. IMC Table 508.1 provides the required CFM per linear foot of hood length. 1.7 Hazardous Exhaust Systems

Duct Construction: Ducts must be constructed of noncombustible materials. For flammable vapors, the duct must be of welded construction or have equivalent leak-tight joints.
Fan Requirements: Fans must be of a type that does not create sparks (e.g., non-ferrous blades or a spark-resistant housing). Motors must be located outside the airstream where possible.
Fire Protection: Hazardous exhaust ducts may require fire dampers or be protected by a fire suppression system.
Makeup Air: Makeup air must be provided to prevent negative pressure, and the system must be interlocked.
Termination: The termination must be located to safely disperse the contaminant, often above the roof line, and must be at least 3 feet from any opening.

1.8 Clothes Dryer Exhaust
Dryer exhaust is a common residential and commercial inspection item.
Duct Material: The duct must be rigid metal (galvanized steel or aluminum). Flexible foil or plastic ducts are prohibited. Semi-rigid metal ducts are permitted but limited to a length of 8 feet.
Maximum Length: The maximum developed length of the duct is 35 feet from the dryer to the termination. This length is reduced by 5 feet for each 90-degree bend and 2.5 feet for each 45-degree bend.
Termination: The duct must terminate outdoors with a backdraft damper. It cannot terminate in an attic, crawlspace, or under a building.
Makeup Air: For commercial dryers, makeup air must be provided.
Inspector's Check: Measure the duct length and count the bends. Verify the duct is rigid metal. Check that the termination has a damper and is not blocked.
1.9 Parking Garages and Other Special Systems
Parking Garages: Enclosed parking garages require mechanical ventilation to control carbon monoxide. The system must be designed to activate when CO levels reach 25 parts per million (ppm) and shut off when they drop to 15 ppm. The exhaust rate is typically based on the floor area (e.g., 0.75 CFM per square foot).
Bathrooms and Toilet Rooms: These require exhaust at a rate of 50 CFM (intermittent) or 20 CFM (continuous). The duct must terminate outdoors.
