1.1 Scope and General Provisions

This chapter of the IMC governs the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of chimneys and vents for all appliances regulated by the code. The primary objective is to ensure the safe removal of flue gases, prevent structural degradation from condensation, and maintain clearances to combustible materials to prevent fire.

Key definitions to know:

Chimney: A primarily vertical structure containing one or more flues, used to convey flue gases to the outside atmosphere.
Vent: A passageway used to convey flue gases from a vented appliance to the outdoors, distinct from a chimney. Venting systems are typically for lower-temperature appliances (e.g., condensing furnaces, water heaters).
Flue: The passageway within a chimney through which gases travel.
Connector: The pipe that connects an appliance to a chimney or vent (also known as a vent connector or flue pipe).
Listed and Labeled: Equipment or materials that have been tested and certified by an approved agency (e.g., UL) to meet specific standards.

Inspector's Note: Always verify that the appliance and the venting system are compatible. A vent designed for a Category I appliance (positive pressure, non-condensing) cannot be used for a Category IV appliance (positive pressure, condensing) unless it is specifically listed for that application.


1.2 Venting Systems for Specific Appliances

The code categorizes appliances by their venting characteristics. The inspector must confirm the appliance's category (found on the rating plate) and match it to the correct vent type.

Category I: Appliances that operate with negative pressure in the vent and have flue gas temperatures that do not cause condensation. Typically vented with Type B vent or masonry chimneys.
Category II: Appliances with negative pressure and a potential for condensation. Requires special venting materials.
Category III: Appliances with positive pressure and non-condensing flue gases. Requires sealed, pressure-tight venting (often special polypropylene or stainless steel).
Category IV: Appliances with positive pressure and condensing flue gases (e.g., high-efficiency condensing furnaces). Requires pressure-tight, corrosion-resistant venting, often PVC or CPVC, or special stainless steel.

1.3 Type B and Type L Vents

Type B Vent: A factory-built, double-wall vent for use with listed appliances that produce flue gases with temperatures not exceeding 400°F (204°C). It is the most common vent for residential gas furnaces and water heaters.
Type L Vent: A factory-built vent designed for appliances with flue gas temperatures up to 570°F (299°C). It is often used for oil-fired appliances.

Installation Requirements:

Must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the listing.
The vent must be supported and secured to prevent movement.
Joints must be securely fastened and sealed to prevent flue gas leakage.
Type B vents must terminate at least 5 feet (1524 mm) in vertical height above the highest connected appliance draft hood or flue collar.

Clearance to Combustibles:

Type B vents typically require a minimum clearance of 1 inch (25 mm) to combustibles, but this can be reduced to zero if the vent is listed for that purpose. Always check the manufacturer's listing.

Inspector's Point: Look for improper support. Type B vents cannot bear the weight of the vent connector. The vent must be supported at intervals per the manufacturer's instructions, typically every 5-8 feet.


1.4 Masonry Chimneys

Masonry chimneys are constructed of brick, stone, or concrete. They are heavy and require a proper foundation.

Key Requirements:

Flue Lining: Must be lined with a listed clay flue liner, a listed metal liner, or a cast-in-place liner. The liner protects the masonry from corrosion and high temperatures.
Thickness: The masonry walls must be at least 4 inches (102 mm) thick for a solid masonry chimney.
Clearance: A minimum of 2 inches (51 mm) of air space is required between the outside of the masonry chimney and combustible framing. This air space must be maintained, and no combustible material can fill it.
Termination: Must extend at least 2 feet (610 mm) above any portion of the building within 10 feet (3048 mm), and at least 3 feet (914 mm) above the highest point where it passes through the roof.

1.5 Factory-Built (Prefabricated) Chimneys

These are tested and listed systems (typically to UL 103) for use with solid fuel, oil, or gas appliances.

Installation Requirements:

Must be installed exactly per the manufacturer's instructions. The listing is void if installed incorrectly.
Must be supported and enclosed per the manufacturer's specifications.
The chimney must be a complete system; components from different manufacturers cannot be mixed.
Termination must be at least 3 feet (914 mm) above the roof penetration and 2 feet (610 mm) higher than any part of the building within 10 feet (3048 mm).

Clearance: Clearances are typically specified by the manufacturer's listing and can range from 2 inches (51 mm) to 3 inches (76 mm) to combustibles.

Inspector's Point: The most common violation is the use of a "single-wall" pipe in place of a listed chimney section in the attic or chase. All portions of the chimney system must be the listed factory-built components.


1.6 Vent Connectors (Flue Pipes)

The connector is the pipe from the appliance to the chimney or vent.

Material and Size:

Must be made of approved material (e.g., galvanized steel, stainless steel, or Type B vent for gas appliances).
The size must be equal to or larger than the appliance flue outlet. The connector cannot be reduced in size.
For a single appliance, the connector size is typically the same as the appliance outlet. For multiple appliances, the connector must be sized per the tables in the code.

Slope and Support:

Connectors must be as short and straight as possible.
They must slope upward toward the chimney or vent at a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot (21 mm/m).
Connectors must be supported at intervals not exceeding 5 feet (1524 mm) to prevent sagging.

Clearance:

Single-wall metal connectors require a minimum clearance of 18 inches (457 mm) to combustible material. This can be reduced to 6 inches (152 mm) with a listed heat shield or other approved protection.
Type B vent connectors have a clearance of 1 inch (25 mm) to combustibles.

1.7 Sizing of Chimney and Vent Systems

This is the most complex area of the chapter. The code provides specific tables for sizing based on the appliance's input rating (BTU/hr) and the height of the chimney or vent.

The "Rule of Thumb" vs. The Tables:

For a single, draft-hood-equipped appliance (like a standard water heater) vented into a Type B vent, the size is often the same as the appliance outlet. However, for multiple appliances or unusual configurations, the tables must be used.

Key Tables in the IMC:

Table 802.4.2 (Vent Connector Sizing): Used to size connectors for multiple appliances.
Table 803.4 (Chimney Sizing): Used to size masonry chimneys.
Tables 804.2 and 804.3 (Type B Vent Sizing): These are the critical tables for sizing Type B vents for one or more appliances. They are organized by appliance type (e.g., fan-assisted, draft-hood equipped) and require you to know the vent height, the lateral (horizontal) run, and the total BTU/hr input.

How to Use the Type B Vent Tables (Exam Strategy):

Inspector's Point: In the field, you rarely calculate sizing. You verify that the installed vent size matches the appliance's rating plate and the manufacturer's instructions. However, for the exam, you must be fluent in using these tables.


1.8 Termination Requirements

The termination of a chimney or vent is critical for preventing downdrafts and ensuring proper dispersion of flue gases.

General Rules:

Vent Terminals (Type B): Must be at least 12 inches (305 mm) above the roof surface. The terminal must be a listed cap that prevents rain entry.
Chimney Terminals: As stated earlier, must be 3 feet (914 mm) above the roof penetration and 2 feet (610 mm) higher than any part of the building within 10 feet (3048 mm).
Clearance from Openings: Terminals must be at least 4 feet (1219 mm) horizontally from, or 4 feet below, or 1 foot (305 mm) above any door, window, or gravity air inlet. This prevents flue gases from re-entering the building.
Location: Terminals cannot be located under a building overhang or near a gas meter.

1.9 Special Venting Situations

Multiple Appliances: When two or more appliances are connected to a single vent or chimney, they must be located on the same floor level, and the connectors must enter the vent at different heights to prevent one appliance from spilling into another.
Condensing Appliances: Must be vented with materials listed for that purpose (e.g., PVC, CPVC, or special stainless steel). The vent must be sloped back to the appliance to allow condensate to drain.
Fireplaces: Solid-fuel fireplaces must be vented by a listed factory-built chimney or a masonry chimney. They cannot be connected to a Type B vent.

1.10 Inspection Points and Common Violations

As a Residential Mechanical Inspector, your field checklist should include:

Common Violations to Cite:

Using single-wall pipe in an attic or chase where a listed chimney is required.
Reducing the size of the vent connector.
Failing to maintain the 2-inch air space around a masonry chimney.
Terminating a vent too close to a window or air intake.
