1.1 Scope and Purpose of Sanitary Drainage
The sanitary drainage system is the network of piping that carries sewage, wastewater, and other liquid waste from fixtures to the public sewer or private disposal system. The primary purpose of the code is to protect the health and safety of occupants by ensuring that waste is removed efficiently, without leaking, and without allowing sewer gases to enter the building.
The code regulates the entire drainage system, including the piping, fittings, traps, and cleanouts. It also governs the connection to the building sewer. As an inspector, you must verify that the system is designed to maintain a water seal in every trap, prevent the accumulation of solids, and allow for maintenance access.
Key Inspector Note: The drainage system is distinct from the vent system. While the drainage system carries water and waste, the vent system protects the trap seals. You must be able to visually distinguish between the two on a jobsite.
1.2 Critical Definitions for Inspection
Understanding the precise language of the code is essential for an open-book exam. These are the terms you will most frequently encounter in the drainage chapter:
Drainage Fitting: A fitting designed for use in a gravity drainage system. These have a smooth interior waterway and are designed to minimize the potential for clogging.
Fixture Unit (d.f.u.): A unit of measure assigned to a fixture that represents its probable discharge load. This is the basis for sizing drainage piping. (Note: This is different from a water supply fixture unit, w.s.f.u.).
Main Drain: The primary horizontal branch of the drainage system that receives discharge from all secondary branches and conveys it to the building sewer.
Stack: A vertical drainage pipe that receives discharge from horizontal branches. A soil stack carries waste from water closets (toilets); a waste stack carries waste from other fixtures.
Building Sewer: The horizontal piping that connects the building drain to the public sewer or private disposal system, typically starting 3 feet outside the building wall.
Building Drain: The lowest horizontal piping in the building that receives discharge from all stacks and conveys it to the building sewer.
Cleanout: An access fitting that allows for the inspection and cleaning of the drainage system.
Slope (Fall): The vertical drop of a horizontal drainage pipe per unit of horizontal length, expressed as inches per foot.
1.3 Minimum Slope Requirements
This is one of the most frequently tested and inspected items. The code mandates a minimum slope to ensure that wastewater flows at a velocity sufficient to carry solids without depositing them in the pipe.
The General Rule: All horizontal drainage piping must be sloped to allow for self-scouring velocity. The minimum slope is based on the diameter of the pipe:

Critical Inspector Point: The most common violation is a 2-inch or smaller pipe installed at ⅛-inch slope. Remember: Smaller pipes require steeper slopes. A 3-inch pipe can run at ⅛-inch slope, but a 2-inch pipe cannot.

1.4 Sizing the Drainage System (Fixture Units)
The code does not allow you to arbitrarily choose pipe sizes. Sizing is based on the calculated Drainage Fixture Unit (d.f.u.) load.
The Process:
39.Assign a d.f.u. value to each fixture. The code provides a table listing common fixtures (e.g., a lavatory = 1 d.f.u., a kitchen sink = 2 d.f.u., a water closet = 3 d.f.u. for a residential toilet).
40.Calculate the total d.f.u. load for a given section of pipe (e.g., a branch serving a bathroom group).
41.Use the sizing tables to select the minimum pipe size that can handle that load.
Key Sizing Tables in the IPC:
Table 710.1(1): Maximum allowable d.f.u. load for horizontal branches and stacks (for stacks with more than 3 branch intervals).
Table 710.1(2): Maximum allowable d.f.u. load for building drains and sewers.
Table 709.1: This is the critical table for assigning d.f.u. values to individual fixtures.
Inspector Note: You will not be asked to design a system, but you must be able to verify that the installed pipe size is not smaller than what the code requires. For example, a residential bathroom group (toilet, lavatory, tub/shower, and possibly a bidet) typically requires a 3-inch horizontal branch. You should be able to spot a 2-inch branch serving a toilet, which is almost always a violation.

1.5 Materials and Joints
The code specifies which materials are approved for drainage piping and how they may be joined. You must be able to identify these materials on site.
Approved Materials (Typical for Residential):
Cast Iron: With hub-and-spigot (using lead and oakum or gaskets) or no-hub (using stainless steel couplings with rubber sleeves).
Galvanized Steel: Typically used for older systems; rarely new installs.
Copper: Type DWV (Drain, Waste, and Vent) is approved, joined by soldering or brazing.
Plastic: ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) are the most common. They are joined with solvent cement.
Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX): Not approved for drainage.
Critical Joint Requirements:
No-Hub Cast Iron: The stainless steel shield and clamp must be torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.
Plastic Pipes: The solvent cement must be specifically formulated for the pipe material (ABS cement for ABS, PVC cement for PVC). You cannot use the same cement for both.
Transition Joints: When connecting different materials (e.g., copper to steel), a dielectric fitting or a listed transition coupling must be used to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Inspector Note: Check for the manufacturer's mark on the pipe. The pipe must be stamped with the appropriate standard (e.g., ASTM D 2661 for ABS, ASTM D 1785 for PVC) and the "NSF-PW" or similar rating for potable water (for supply) or "NSF-dwv" for drain, waste, and vent.

1.6 Traps and Cleanouts
1.6.1 Traps
Every fixture that discharges into the drainage system must have a trap to prevent sewer gas from entering the building. The trap's water seal is the barrier.
Key Requirements:
Type: Every trap must be a "trap" as defined by the code. S-traps are prohibited because they are prone to siphoning. Only P-traps (or S-traps with a vent, which is still generally not allowed) are acceptable. The standard is a P-trap.
Seal Depth: The water seal must be a minimum of 2 inches and a maximum of 4 inches.
Prohibited Traps: Traps with moving parts, traps that depend on the action of moving parts, and "crown-vented" traps (where the vent connects below the trap weir) are not allowed.
Location: A trap must be located within 24 inches of the fixture outlet (for most fixtures) and must be installed on the same floor level as the fixture it serves.
Inspector Note: The most common trap violation is the use of an S-trap at a kitchen sink or lavatory. You must verify that the vent connection is on the drain side of the trap, not the crown.
1.6.2 Cleanouts
Cleanouts are required to provide access for rodding and cleaning the system.
Required Locations:
Building Drain: At the point where the building drain exits the building (just inside the foundation wall).
Horizontal Branches: At the base of each vertical stack, and at intervals not to exceed 100 feet on long horizontal runs.
Changes in Direction: A cleanout is required at every change in direction greater than 45 degrees (e.g., a 90-degree turn in a horizontal run).
Size Requirement: The cleanout must be the same size as the pipe it serves, up to a maximum of 4 inches.

1.7 Prohibited Connections and Practices
As an inspector, you must be vigilant for illegal connections that compromise the system's integrity.
No Sump Pump or Ejector Discharge: A sump pump or sewage ejector cannot discharge directly into a gravity drainage system unless it is connected through an approved air gap or a "sump with a vent" arrangement.
No Food Waste Disposal Units: In some jurisdictions, disposals are not allowed to discharge into a grease interceptor (check local amendments). The code prohibits the discharge of commercial food waste into a public sewer without proper treatment.
No Double Trapping: A fixture cannot have two traps in series (e.g., a trap in the fixture and another trap in the floor drain).
No Cross-Connection: The drainage system must be completely separate from the potable water supply system. There can be no direct physical connection.

1.9 Practical Inspection Points (The "On-Site" Checklist)
When you are on the jobsite, use this mental checklist to guide your inspection of the sanitary drainage system:
95.Rough-In Stage (Before Concealment):
Slope: Use a level and a tape measure to verify the slope on all horizontal runs. Check that a 2-inch pipe has at least ¼-inch per foot fall.
Pipe Size: Verify the pipe diameter matches the approved plans and the fixture unit calculations. Check that the toilet branch is 3 inches.
Fittings: Ensure that drainage fittings (sweep or long-radius elbows) are used for changes in direction, not pressure fittings (short-radius).
Cleanouts: Confirm cleanouts are installed at the base of stacks, at the building drain exit, and at changes in direction.
Trap Location: Verify that traps are installed and are the correct type (P-trap, not S-trap). Check the distance from the fixture outlet to the trap (≤ 24 inches).
Support: Check that horizontal pipes are supported at intervals per code (e.g., every 4 feet for 1-inch pipe, every 4 feet for 2-inch, etc.) and that vertical pipes are supported at every floor level.
102.Final Stage (After Fixtures are Set):
Water Test: The code requires a water or air test. You should witness the test. For a water test, the system is filled with water to the highest point and must hold that water for 15 minutes without leaking.
Fixture Connections: Check that the fixture is properly connected to the trap and that there are no visible leaks.
Cleanout Access: Ensure cleanout plugs are accessible and not permanently concealed behind finished walls or floors.
1.10 Common Pitfalls to Avoid on the Exam
Confusing d.f.u. with w.s.f.u.: The drainage fixture unit is a different value from the water supply fixture unit. Do not mix them up.
Forgetting the Slope Rule: The ¼-inch slope applies to pipes 2 ½ inches and smaller. A 3-inch pipe only needs ⅛-inch.
Ignoring the "Crown Vented" Trap: A vent connection that is too close to the trap weir (the bottom of the trap's outlet) is a violation.
Overlooking the "24-Inch Rule": The distance from a fixture outlet to the trap weir is limited.
Assuming All Fittings are the Same: A "sanitary tee" is for vertical connections; a "wye" is for horizontal connections. Using a sanitary tee on its back in a horizontal run is a violation.
