1.1 Overview of Special Occupancies (NEC Articles 500–590)

The NEC groups "special occupancies" into a distinct part of the Code. These occupancies present hazards or operational conditions not addressed by the general wiring rules in Chapters 1–4. As an inspector, you must verify that the installation complies with both the general requirements and the specific article that applies to the occupancy.

1.2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations – Article 500

Scope and Purpose. Article 500 provides the foundation for all classified locations. A hazardous location is an area where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases, vapors, liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers.

Classification System. The NEC uses a three-part classification: Class, Division (or Zone), and Group.

Class I – Flammable gases, vapors, or liquids.
Class II – Combustible dust.
Class III – Ignitable fibers or flyings.

Divisions. Each class is further divided:

Division 1 – Hazard exists under normal operating conditions (or during maintenance/repair).
Division 2 – Hazard exists only under abnormal conditions (e.g., accidental rupture, equipment failure).

Groups. Groups classify the specific material:

Class I, Groups A–D (A = acetylene; B = hydrogen; C = ethylene; D = propane/methane).
Class II, Groups E–G (E = metal dust; F = carbonaceous dust; G = flour, starch, grain).
Class III – No group designation.

Zone Classification (Article 505). The NEC also permits an alternative Zone system for Class I locations (Zones 0, 1, 2). This is used primarily in industrial facilities. For the residential inspector exam, focus on the Division system, but know that Zone markings are acceptable under specific conditions.

Equipment Markings. Equipment installed in classified locations must be marked with the class, division, group, and operating temperature code. For example: "Class I, Div. 1, Group D, T3." The T-code indicates the maximum surface temperature (e.g., T3 = 200 °C). An inspector must verify that the equipment's T-code is compatible with the ignition temperature of the specific material present.

Wiring Methods (General). In Division 1 locations, wiring must be in rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), or Type MI cable. In Division 2, additional methods such as Type MC cable and enclosed gasketed raceways are permitted. Sealing fittings are required where conduits enter enclosures containing arcing devices.

Inspection Point: Verify that all boxes, fittings, and enclosures are approved for the specific class and division. Check that seals are installed within 18 inches of the enclosure and that no unused openings exist.


1.3 Commercial Garages, Repair and Storage – Article 511

Scope. Applies to locations used for vehicle service, repair, or storage where flammable liquids or gases are present (e.g., gasoline, propane).

Classification. The area above the floor up to 18 inches is classified as Class I, Division 2 in most repair areas. This is known as the "floor level" hazardous zone. The classification extends to 18 inches above the floor in areas where fuel systems are serviced.

Wiring Methods. In the classified floor area, use RMC, IMC, or Type MI cable. In non-classified areas above 18 inches, standard wiring methods are permitted.

Equipment. Electrical equipment installed within the classified zone must be explosion-proof or otherwise approved for Class I, Division 2. Receptacles installed in the floor area must be rated for the location.

Ventilation. If the garage has mechanical ventilation that operates continuously, the classified area may be reduced. The inspector must verify that the ventilation system is interlocked with the electrical equipment.

Inspection Point: Measure the 18-inch boundary. Check that no receptacles, switches, or junction boxes are installed below this line unless they are rated for the location.


1.4 Aircraft Hangars – Article 513

Scope. Applies to hangars used for storage or servicing of aircraft with flammable liquids or gases.

Classification. The area within 5 feet horizontally from the aircraft and extending from the floor up to 5 feet above the aircraft is classified as Class I, Division 2. The floor area within 18 inches is also classified.

Wiring. In the classified zone, use RMC, IMC, or Type MI cable. Outside the classified zone, standard wiring is permitted.

Special Requirements.

All switches, breakers, and controls must be located outside the classified area or be explosion-proof.
Aircraft battery charging equipment must be in a separate, ventilated room.
Mobile servicing equipment (e.g., ground power units) must be approved for the location.

Inspection Point: Verify that the boundary of the classified area is clearly identifiable and that no general-purpose receptacles are within the 5-foot radius of the aircraft storage area.


1.5 Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities – Article 514

Scope. Applies to locations where gasoline or other volatile fuels are dispensed.

Classification. The area within 18 inches of the ground and extending 20 feet horizontally from the dispenser is classified as Class I, Division 2. The interior of the dispenser itself is Division 1.

Wiring Methods. Use RMC, IMC, or Type MI cable for underground and above-ground wiring in the classified area. Flexible connections to dispensers must be listed for the purpose.

Disconnects. A clearly identified emergency disconnect switch must be installed at a location remote from the dispensers. This switch must disconnect all power to the dispensing equipment.

Underground Wiring. Underground wiring must be in conduit or cable approved for direct burial. Sealing fittings are required where conduits transition from underground to above ground.

Inspection Point: Confirm the emergency disconnect is accessible, labeled, and not located within the classified area. Check that the dispenser is properly bonded and grounded.


1.6 Health Care Facilities – Article 517

Scope. Applies to hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other facilities where patients receive medical care.

Key Definitions.

Patient Care Area – Any area where patients are examined or treated.
Patient Bed Location – The area around a patient bed, extending 6 feet beyond the bed.
Essential Electrical System (EES) – The system that supplies power to critical areas during a normal power failure.

Wiring Methods. In patient care areas, wiring must be in metal raceways or Type MC cable. Non-metallic cable (NM) is not permitted in these areas.

Grounding. All receptacles in patient care areas must be grounded. In critical care areas, the grounding impedance must be verified. Isolated power systems (ungrounded) may be required in wet procedure locations, such as operating rooms.

Receptacle Requirements.

Each patient bed location must have at least eight receptacles (in hospitals).
Receptacles must be listed as "hospital grade" and marked with a green dot.
In pediatric areas, tamper-resistant receptacles are required.

Essential Electrical System. The EES must have two branches:

Life Safety Branch – Power for exit signs, emergency lighting, fire alarms.
Critical Branch – Power for patient care equipment, operating rooms, and life support.

Both branches must be connected to a generator capable of supplying power within 10 seconds of a normal power failure.

Inspection Point: Verify that the generator transfer switch is listed for emergency use and that the life safety branch is clearly labeled. Check that all patient bed receptacles are hospital grade and properly grounded.


1.7 Assembly Occupancies – Article 518

Scope. Applies to buildings or portions used for assembly of 100 or more persons (e.g., theaters, churches, banquet halls).

Wiring Methods. Wiring must be in metal raceways, Type MC cable, or other approved methods. Non-metallic sheathed cable is not permitted in assembly occupancies with a fire-resistance rating.

Exit Signs and Emergency Lighting. These must be powered from a source that remains functional for at least 90 minutes after a power failure.

Portable Cords. Flexible cords are permitted only for temporary wiring or for connection of portable equipment. They must be listed and of the hard-service type (S, SO, ST).

Inspection Point: Check that all wiring is protected from physical damage and that no open splices exist. Verify that the emergency lighting system has a battery backup or generator.


1.8 Carnivals, Circuses, and Fairs – Article 525

Scope. Applies to temporary installations at fairs, carnivals, and similar events.

Wiring Methods. All wiring must be in flexible cords or cables listed for hard usage (e.g., Type W, G). Cords must be protected from vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic.

Grounding and GFCI. All receptacles supplying portable equipment must be GFCI-protected. The entire installation must be grounded and bonded.

Disconnects. A main disconnect must be provided at the service equipment. Each individual ride or attraction must have a disconnecting means within sight.

Inspection Point: Verify that cords are not run across walkways without proper protection (e.g., ramps or covers). Check that all connections are made with listed connectors and that no taped splices exist.


1.9 Temporary Installations – Article 527

Scope. Applies to temporary power for construction, remodeling, maintenance, and similar activities.

Duration. Temporary installations are permitted only during the period of construction or maintenance. They must be removed upon completion.

Wiring Methods. Use Type NM, SE, or hard-service cords. All receptacles must be GFCI-protected.

Feeders and Branch Circuits. Feeders must be protected from physical damage. Branch circuits supplying temporary lighting and tools must have overcurrent protection.

Disconnect. A readily accessible disconnecting means must be provided for all temporary power.

Inspection Point: Verify that all temporary panels are properly grounded and that GFCI protection is provided for all 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles.


1.10 Agricultural Buildings – Article 547

Scope. Applies to buildings used for agricultural purposes (e.g., barns, poultry houses, greenhouses).

Special Hazards. These buildings are subject to corrosive atmospheres (ammonia, dust, moisture). Wiring must be corrosion-resistant.

Wiring Methods. Use RMC, IMC, PVC conduit, or Type UF cable. All equipment must be suitable for wet and corrosive locations.

Grounding. All metal parts must be bonded and grounded. Equipotential planes are required in areas where animals are housed to prevent step-and-touch voltages.

GFCI. All 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles must be GFCI-protected.

Inspection Point: Check that all boxes and fittings are corrosion-resistant and that no standard non-metallic boxes are used in areas with high moisture.

1.12 Practical Inspection Checklist

When inspecting a special occupancy, use this mental checklist:
